Jahshaka's morphing interface allows you to work as a editor when you are editing, to work as a compositor when you are creating effects, as a audio enginer when you are mixing, and as a animator when you are doing 3d. It will even allow you to create your own hybrid interfaces to match your workflow.
This power and flexability has been unheard of, but its coming your way soon. Imagine a system simple enough to edit home videos and mix audio tracks, but powerful enough to edit HDTV, create film effects or animate a flock of seagulls.
Jahshaka fixes many of the compatability and file sharing problems that exist in large facilities today. Kino

Kino is a non-linear DV editor for GNU/Linux. It features excellent integration with IEEE-1394 for capture, VTR control, and recording back to the camera. It captures video to disk in Raw DV and AVI format, in both type-1 DV and type-2 DV (separate audio stream) encodings.
You can load multiple video clips, cut and paste portions of video/audio, and save it to an edit decision list (SMIL XML format). Most edit and navigation commands are mapped to equivalent vi key commands. Also, Kino can export the composite movie in a number of formats: DV over IEEE 1394, Raw DV, DV AVI, still frames, WAV, MP3, Ogg Vorbis, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, and MPEG-4. Still frame import and export uses gdk-pixbuf, which has support for BMG, GIF, JPEG, PNG, PPM, SVG, Targa, TIFF, and XPM. MP3 requires lame. Ogg Vorbis requires oggenc. MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 require mjpegtools or ffmpeg. MPEG-4 requires ffmpeg.

MPEG Tools

The mjpeg programs are a set of tools that can do recording of videos and playback, simple cut-and-paste editing and the MPEG compression of audio and video under Linux.

Recording is supported for the Zoran based cards like the Buz (Iomega), DC10 (MIRO, Pinnacle), Matrox Marvel cards and the LML33 (Linux Media Labs). See related pages to the right to find the right driver for your card.
The recorded videos can be converted to MPEG streams. The software playback of MPEG streams works with almost every player and every OS.
You can produce special forms of MPEG streams like VCD (Video CD) and SVCD for hardware playback.

A key design objective of the tools is interoperability with other video tools:
The tools can be used used to edit, playback and compress motion JPEG (MJPEG) AVI's captured using the xawtv package.
The tools can be used to edit playback and compress MJPEG streams created and editted with broadcast 2000. N.b. the current mpeg2movie high bit-rate MPEG encoder is in large part derived from an obsolescent snapshot of the mjpegtools MPEG encoder.
Transcoding of MPEG-2 streams to MPEG-2/MPEG-1 is supported through patches to the output drivers for mpeg2dec and ac3dec tools from the Linux Video and DVD Project.
dv2jpg converts a DV codec-encoded AVI stream (from dvgrab, for example) to an mjpeg-encoded AVI stream that can be processed by the mjpeg tools package. The mjpeg AVI can be converted to mpeg video/audio and burned onto a VCD later.

FLVTool2

FLVTool2 is a manipulation tool for Macromedia Flash Video files (FLV). FLVTool2 can calculate a lot of meta data and insert a onMetaData tag. It can cut FLV files and add cue Points (onCuePoint). A debug command lets you see inside our FLV and the print command gives you meta data information in XML or YAML format.

AsfBin

AsfBin is a command line utility for cutting out fragments, joining, editing and repairing ASF files. AsfBin can be applied to any ASF file, that is, not only to those with ASF extension but also those with WMV and WMA extensions. Precision, speed and the maximum fidelity was my top priorities in desing of the AsfBin software. Not to mention, of course, reliabilty of this tool.
The whole operation is performed without recompression of the whole file. On a user demand, only a couple of first samples may be recompressed to give the ultimate precision in cutting. Because of that, the video quality is not degraded and the resulting file remains as unchanges as possible.

Movica

Editing AVI files is easily done through VirtualDub but for .wmv, .flv, .rm and .mpg files the tools are less easily available. Some very good command line tools are available for editing these files viz.
  • AsfBin - Very, very well done editor for Windows media files
  • MpgTx - A tool being developed largely for POSIX apps. Tiny.
  • flvtool - A tool meant largely for metadata management.
Not all these programs are open source programs. Only MpgTx and flvtool are open-source tools. [Please bear in mind that you should get a license for AsfBin if you choose to use this for commercial use]
If you have Real Producer Basic 11 installed on your computer you may be able to use Movica to edit .rm files.
Movica is just a graphical user interface that uses these fine programs to edit movie files. A great deal of emphasis has been placed on keyboard shortcuts to make the job of editing easier.
Briefly what you can do is -

- Select or delete multiple portions from a video file.
- Copy, paste and fine tune the selections.

Avidemux

Avidemux is a free video editor designed for simple cutting, filtering and encoding tasks. It supports many file types, including AVI, DVD compatible MPEG files, MP4 and ASF, using a variety of codecs. Tasks can be automated using projects, job queue and powerful scripting capabilities.
Avidemux is available for Linux, BSD, Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows under the GNU GPL license. The program was written from scratch by Mean, but code from other people and projects has been used as well. Patches, translations and even bug reports are always welcome.

AviSynth

AviSynth is a powerful tool for video post-production. It provides ways of editing and processing videos. AviSynth works as a frameserver, providing instant editing without the need for temporary files.
AviSynth itself does not provide a graphical user interface (GUI), but instead relies on a script system that allows advanced non-linear editing. While this may at first seem tedious and unintuitive, it is remarkably powerful and is a very good way to manage projects in a precise, consistent, and reproducible manner. Because text-based scripts are human readable, projects are inherently self-documenting. The scripting language is simple yet powerful, and complex filters can be created from basic operations to develop a sophisticated palette of useful and unique effects.
AviSynth works by faking AVI files. That means that AviSynth script files work in principle with all media applications and players capable of opening AVI files. What you might see in real life is that not all applications treat video files like they are supposed to. (For instance, Ligos MPEG encoder will not let you choose anything but straight AVI files in the file selector. But if you load an AVI, and manually change the name in the filename box to .AVS - it works perfectly.)
Because AviSynth works like a frameserver your filters are being applied 'on-the-fly'. That means that when a program that has opened an AVS file requests frame 303, it is read from the source, the filters are applied before the frame is delivered to the program.
