Fwink

Fwink is a free and open source webcam application for Windows. It takes still images from your camera at timed intervals and puts them on your web site with FTP. You can add effects like text messages, time stamps and an overlay image.
Fwink does not make live video calls. For that, you may want to try Windows Live Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, Skype, etc.
You can superimpose a logo, or any image you want, on top of your webcam image. The following image formats are supported: JPEG, GIF (transparency is supported), PNG (transparency and alpha are supported), BMP, TIFF and WMF.
You can trigger your camera with the ATI Remote Wonder. Instructions for configuring this plug-in are provided with Fwink.

Taksi

Taksi is a utility that allows you to take screenshots and record video clips of your favourite games and other 3D-graphics applications. Taksi can support live video compression with any VFW video codec your system has installed (i.e. XVid, DivX, MS Mpeg4, etc). Supports user-specified key mapping, allowing user to assign almost any key to a particular function (such as video start/stop, screenshot trigger, etc.). Runtime re-mapping of the keys is supported via GUI: user can change keys without having to restart the game.
Custom video settings are supported. Basically, this allows a user to specify on a per-game basis the frame rate of the captured video, and the weight of each source frame. The weight determines whether a particular frame is captured or not. This allows for creation of smoother and faster videos, when generic algorithm doesn't produce desired results.

MPEG Tools

The mjpeg programs are a set of tools that can do recording of videos and playback, simple cut-and-paste editing and the MPEG compression of audio and video under Linux.

Recording is supported for the Zoran based cards like the Buz (Iomega), DC10 (MIRO, Pinnacle), Matrox Marvel cards and the LML33 (Linux Media Labs). See related pages to the right to find the right driver for your card.
The recorded videos can be converted to MPEG streams. The software playback of MPEG streams works with almost every player and every OS.
You can produce special forms of MPEG streams like VCD (Video CD) and SVCD for hardware playback.

A key design objective of the tools is interoperability with other video tools:
The tools can be used used to edit, playback and compress motion JPEG (MJPEG) AVI's captured using the xawtv package.
The tools can be used to edit playback and compress MJPEG streams created and editted with broadcast 2000. N.b. the current mpeg2movie high bit-rate MPEG encoder is in large part derived from an obsolescent snapshot of the mjpegtools MPEG encoder.
Transcoding of MPEG-2 streams to MPEG-2/MPEG-1 is supported through patches to the output drivers for mpeg2dec and ac3dec tools from the Linux Video and DVD Project.
dv2jpg converts a DV codec-encoded AVI stream (from dvgrab, for example) to an mjpeg-encoded AVI stream that can be processed by the mjpeg tools package. The mjpeg AVI can be converted to mpeg video/audio and burned onto a VCD later.

macam

macam is a driver for USB webcams on Mac OS X. It allows hundreds of USB webcams to be used by many Mac OS X video-aware applications. The aim is to support as many webcams as possible. In addition, macam also supports downloading of images from some dual-mode cameras. macam especially tries to support those cameras not supported by Apple or by their manufacturers.
macam consist of an application and a component. Run the macam application to verify whether your camera works with your Mac and your USB setup. The component is the actual driver that allows other applications to access the video-stream. (note: iChat does not recognize most USB webcams unless you install iChatUSBCam - this is shareware unrelated to macam).
macam supports several hundred different cameras! Many Logitech, Creative and other name brand cameras are supported, as are a large number of generic, and store-branded cameras. Thus many cameras are supported that we have not even heard about.

WDM Video Capture Driver

The current driver is a Video Capture driver for Bt848, Bt849, Bt878 and Bt879 based video capture boards. It tries to take the most of the hardware, using all the features the chipset has to offer. It is also implemented as a WDM driver, so the same driver works under Win2000, Win98SE, WinXP and WinMe without modifications.
This is a total rewrite of the reference drivers so I was able to solve some of the main problems it had, such as to support quite a bit more capture cards, make NetMeeting work with it, add lots of analog video standards, make it more stable, improve ACPI support, hibernate, AVI capture, frame size, FM and AM radio for those cards that have it, lower the CPU usage, support hardware overlay flipping, etc... Take a look at the source code to see if you can recognize it as the reference driver it was!

VirtualDub

VirtualDub is a video capture/processing utility for 32-bit and 64-bit Windows platforms (98/ME/NT4/2000/XP/Vista/7), licensed under the GNU General Public License (GPL). It lacks the editing power of a general-purpose editor such as Adobe Premiere, but is streamlined for fast linear operations over video. It has batch-processing capabilities for processing large numbers of files and can be extended with third-party video filters. VirtualDub is mainly geared toward processing AVI files, although it can read (not write) MPEG-1 and also handle sets of BMP images.
Sure, you've probably played a few video clips on your monitor. But have you ever made one yourself? Used a video capture device? Wrestled with the software that comes with it? Felt like the software is a few leagues above or below your level? Time to try something else. If your capture device is Video for Windows compatible, then VirtualDub can capture video with it. But VirtualDub isn't your average capture program:
  • Fractional frame rates. Don't settle for 29 or 30 when you want 29.97.
  • Optimized disk access for more consistent hard disk usage.
  • Create AVI2 (OpenDML) files to break the AVI 2GB barrier and multiple files to break the FAT32 4GB limit.
  • Integrated volume meter and histogram for input level monitoring.
  • Real-time downsizing, noise reduction, and field swapping.
  • Verbose monitoring, including compression levels, CPU usage, and free disk space.
  • Access hidden video formats your capture card may support but not have a setting for, such as 352x480.
  • Keyboard and mouse shortcuts for faster operation. To capture, just hit F6.
  • Clean interface layout: caption, menu bar, info panel, status bar.
There are lots of programs that let you "edit" video. And yet, they're frustratingly complex for some of the simplest tasks. VirtualDub isn't an editor application; it's a pre- and post-processor that works as a valuable companion. The author of VirtualDub is very impatient. That means his program is designed for speed, both in the interface and in the processing pipeline. Converting a compressed, 320x240 MPEG-1 file to an uncompressed, 24-bit AVI requires only these two steps in VirtualDub.
